Fly of the Month 03.25 - Secret Weapon
This local fly pattern is provided by Roger Lowe of Cashiers, North Carolina and is published in his book Roger Lowe’s Fly Pattern Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains. The fly pattern which is similar to the prince nymph was originated by Allene Hall (1918-1995) of Bryson City, North Carolina. This fly [pattern] was first tied in the Smokies as a year-round consistent [fly] pattern. Years later, the Modified Secret Weapon was originated by Don R. Howell of Brevard, North Carolina. As the bead heads became popular, the Green BH (bead-head) Secret Weapon was originated by Benny Joe Craig of Waynesville, North Carolina. This fine sporting store is located at 4732 Sharon Road, Charlotte. Sam Johnson has done an incredible job detailing how and where to fish along the Blue Ridge Parkway in two books - one devoted to North Carolina and the second book covering Virginia.. He covers an extensive range of wild trout waters located in our backyard! The section below comes from Sam's webpage. Trout Don’t Live In Ugly Places…They live in beautiful places, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway. For the first time, fly fishing savant Sam Johnson has captured in one guide an incredible “bucket list” of over 210 of the most serene and productive places to chase trout along the North Carolina Section of the Parkway. His second book covers Virginia. His boots on the ground and lines in the water experience, offer detailed descriptions and insight for each water shed. And with just enough of their history and lore to make those evening campfire sessions even more interesting. COMMITTEE UPDATES
Trout in the Classroom Spring 2025 Releases on Stream
TIC releases are being scheduled for April and May dates. if you are interested, please advise Dr. Dana Hershey at [email protected].
We have a big event at Stone Mountain State Park on Saturday, May 3rd. We plan for a morning release of fingerlings followed by a cookout for students and their families. We will need a bunch of volunteers to make this work successfully as in past years. Stay tuned for more on this outing. We are considering adding a streamside in advance of the release/cookout. The Park is scheduled to be stocked with trout the first week of May. Outreach
We recently had our 2025 FORR Celebration and it was great to see so many of our chapter members at this event. We wish to thank everyone for their continued financial support. Special thanks to John Powell who organized everything. The monies raised go to support coldwater conservation and education efforts of Trout Unlimited.

We welcome women of all skill levels and have events suited as such. Our year round events include fishing stocked, wild and private trout waters. We also branch out into fly tying, educational clinics, ladies night out and much more!
