Fly of the Month 09.22
Roger Lowe
Jim Charley
The Jim Charlie is an original Southern Appalachian dry fly pattern, possibly named after an individual and friend of Charlie C. Messer of Western North Carolina. The friend is believed to have been the son of Charley Pope, James Charles Pope and referred to by the nickname Jim Charley. According to Roger Lowe of Cashiers, North Carolina, Charlie C. Messer who lived in Western North Carolina created the Jim Charley fly pattern for use on the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in both the East and West Fork of the Pigeon River.
Companion versions of the fly pattern include the Jim Charley Orange and the Jim Charley Royal. Using orange is relatively unique and actually rare for a Southern appalachian fly pattern. More prevalent, Southern fly tyers simply add a bright red band to the body of their flies to create a “royal” version that often improve the attraction of trout to the fly under the mid-day, bright, sunny conditions. In this case, Troy Watson from Western North Carolina, is credited with the creation of the Jim Charley Royal.
The Jim Charley and the Jim Charley Royal are local fly pattern is provided by Roger Lowe of Cashiers, North Carolina and is published in his book Roger Lowe’s Fly Pattern Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains. The Jim Charley Orange was discovered in Benny Joe Craig’s personal fly tying book of recipes.
