Selected NC Wildlife Resources Commission Coldwater Research Activities
The following research projects are underway or planned by NC Wildlife Resource Commision, the state governmental agency which manages the mountain public trout streams and our conservation partner. Some of these projects may utilize volunteer assistance in the field. For those activities with schedules developed in advance, announcements will be made in the Trout Tales, the newsletter of Rocky River Trout Unlimited. Email the NC Wildlife Resource Commission coldwater biologist contact if you have questions or an interest in a particular project:

Phylogeography of NC Brook Trout
Characterize the population genetics of NC brook trout via microsatellite DNA analysis. Contact: Jacob Rash
Distribution of NC trout populations
Maintain current distribution data for NC trout populations. COntact: Jacob Rash
Long-term Monitoring of Selected Wild Trout Populations in NC
Obtain continued measures of annual variability in population characteristics of select wild trout populations. Contact: Jacob Rash
Mitigating the Impacts of Acidification to Improve Water Quality within Santeetlah Creek
Address impacts of acid deposition to enhance brook trout populations within Santeetlah Creek watershed.
Contact: Jason Farmer (USDA Forest Service, and Jacob Rash.
Evaluation of Advanced Fingerling Brown Trout Stockings in the Bridgewater Tailrace
Determine if an alternate management strategy can negate potential thermal bottlenecks and produce a more consistent fishery in Bridgewater Tailrace. Contact: Chris Wood

Evaluation of Fingerling Brown Trout Stockings in Linville Gorge Wilderness Area
Determine if fingerling stockings are contributing to the brown trout fishery and to describe brown trout population dynamics in Linville Gorge.
Contact: Chris Wood
Contribution of Stocked Brown and Rainbow Trout in Apalachia Reservoir
Determine the best size and species of trout for put-grow-and-take stocking in Apalachia Reservoir, and determine the long-term tag retention and visibility implant elastomer (VIE) in stocked brown and rainblow trout. Contact: Amanda Bushon
Monitoring of the Nantahala Bypass Fishery
Monitor potential impacts to the existing fishery with the Nantahala River Bypassed Reach in association with recreational flow releases.
Contact: Amanda Bushon
Persistence and Movement of Stocked Trout
Define the extent and causes of stocked trout migration from selected Delayed Harvest Trout Waters. Contact: jacob Rash
Assessment of Angler use on Two Wild Streams in Wilkes County, NC
